If Rick Rubin is Yoda, then I’m Obi-Wan
If Rick Rubin is Yoda, And you’re Anakin, then I’m Obi-Wan Kenobi.
I will train you TO BE CREATIVE.
Now, I’m not saying I’m a Jedi Master, but I do know a thing or two about the force. The CREATIVE FORCE.
Trust your FEELINGS.
This is actually a perfect metaphor.
Like the Jedi, who wield the Force to bring balance to the galaxy, creatives use their talents to shape ideas, solve problems, and bring something new into the world. Much like in the Star Wars universe, harnessing this force requires training, discipline, and the right mindset. You don’t just wake up one day with a fully formed creative vision, brilliant with your design-thinking capacity, just as you don’t suddenly become a Jedi Knight. Young Anakin felt there was something more for him, but he needed a teacher and a creative environment.
FeelCREATIVE was built to be a training program, a BRIDGE between the lofty inspiring characters like Rick Rubin and other mega-creatives and wherever you are now. If you know there’s more to you than you’ve tapped into, then heck yeah, let’s train.
The Power of Practice
Think about how Jedi trainees, or Padawans, spend years learning how to wield their lightsabers, practicing with determination and focus. Similarly, building your creative muscle is about consistent practice. It’s about showing up every day, even when inspiration seems like it’s light-years away.
Where young Jedis are training with lightsabers, we are training with our sensory observations and design principles. Every time you observe something—see a beautiful door, hear a mysterious sound, smell a beautiful candle, taste a peculiar flavor, or feel some beautiful fabric—ask yourself:
Why did this catch my attention?
What else could this be?
What story could this tell?
This is how you go a layer deeper into yourself… This is what stimulates your creative mechanism until it eventually just stays on.
Mastering the CREATIVE Mindset
The Jedi aren’t just warriors; they’re philosophers, too. They meditate, they reflect, and they cultivate a mindset that allows them to stay centered in the face of challenges. When things get chaotic, they bring stillness. They find a balance between action and slowness.
Creativity is not inspiration. You don’t just receive creativity. You may from time to time get an idea that feels like it’s heaven sent, but that’s actually when your creative process begins. Creative thinking is what’s going to guide that idea into the real world. And more often than not, that process requires slow observation and emotional attention, more than swift careless actions hoping you get something right.
The Art of Problem-Solving
When you face a creative challenge, it's not unlike a Jedi facing a difficult mission. The path forward isn’t always clear, but a true Jedi learns to see (and feel) beyond the obvious. Methodically sensing into every situation to unveil what is truly there is pivotal!
In your creative journey, there will be obstacles—just as there were for Anakin and Luke. The solution? A blend of intuition and learned techniques. You have to trust your gut while applying the principles you've honed over time. This is where training comes in. The more you learn about creative principles—whether to be applied in design, writing, music, or any other art form—the better equipped you are to navigate these challenges. And the more versatile you will be with creative thinking.
Students of the Force.
Finding Your Own Path
Every Jedi’s journey is unique. Luke’s path wasn’t the same as Anakin’s, and your creative path won’t be the same as anyone else’s. But that’s the beauty of it. The creative force flows differently in each of us. Your job is to discover how it manifests in you.
Some people find their creative force through meticulous planning and structure. Others tap into it through spontaneity and improvisation. Neither approach is wrong; they’re just different ways of reaching the same goal. The key is to find what works for you and to trust in the process.
Protecting the Essence
Ideas evolve. What starts as a perfect notion can change shape as you work on it. And also sometimes there’s no distinct notion, and you have to experiment until one begins to stand out. In either case, it’s crucial to protect the essence of why—what is all this design thinking for. It’s easy to get lost in the weeds of a project and forget why you’re doing any of it. That feeling is your guide. The creative force within you responds to that initial excitement—hold onto it as your idea grows and morphs into its final form.
Thinking Predictively
One skill that every Jedi develops is the ability to foresee potential outcomes—sometimes through the Force, but mostly through experience and training. As you grow in your creative practice, you’ll start to think ahead. What obstacles might arise? What’s the best way to approach this idea? Learning to anticipate challenges and preparing solutions in advance is a skill that will set you apart, and it requires not just experience, but attentive experience, a constant self-study of how and where your solutions and ideas come from.
Planning doesn’t mean stifling creativity; it means creating a space where creativity can flourish. Plans are Frameworks. And like the ones we learn in the courses here, that structure directs thought and energy productively.
Learning How You Learn
Finally, the best Jedi know themselves inside and out. They understand their strengths, their weaknesses, and how they connect to the Force. As a creative, it’s equally important to understand how you learn, how you think, and how you connect to your senses. Are you more visual or auditory? Do you learn by doing, or by observing?
Understanding your learning style helps you tap into your creative force more effectively. It allows you to structure your training (because yes, creativity requires training) in a way that’s aligned with your natural inclinations.
The journey to mastering creativity is a lot like becoming a Jedi. It’s a path that requires dedication, self-awareness, and a willingness to embrace both the light and dark sides of the creative process, the victories and the failures. Failure is where we learn. With the right mindset, the right training, and a bit of the Force on your side, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
